Do's and Don'ts for Nail Care

A “Do’s and Don’ts” list for basic nail care:

DO:
• moisturize to keep cuticles from drying or cracking.
• push cuticles back instead of trimming them.
• exfoliate hands twice a week to keep them looking young.
• file nails in one direction with a fine-grit nail file.
• buff nails for a shinier finish.
• use nail polish remover to get rid of oils before applying polish.
• whiten nails by soaking in lemon water.
• use a base coat and two coats of nail polish.
• apply a top coat every two days.
• use a nail protein oil to prevent peeling and splitting.
• drink plenty of water.
• take vitamins that include folic acid for healthier nails.

DON’T:
• trim cuticles, as it leads to hang nails.
• bite nails … ever!
• garden without gloves. Dirt gets into nails and dries them out.
• match fingers and toes. Feel free to go natural on your fingers and bold on your piggy toes.
• cut toe nails at an angle. Cut straight across and file edges to avoid ingrown toe nails.
• keep toe nails long if you run or exercise a lot.
• wear shoes that are too small. Buy one-half size larger and wear thick socks when exercising.
• forget about taking care of yourself, feeling good and looking good.
